I bought this audiobook and "Tell Me a Story 2" audiobook for my two first graders. Both kids love the Geronimo Stilton series, however we only listen to those read by Edward Herrmann and we have just about worn them out. (Not to take anything away from other reader(s) but once you lock in on Mr. Herrman's character voices it is difficult to listen to any other rendition - he is fantastic and I highly recommend!) Each of the "Tell Me a Story" CDs has about 8 folktales from different parts of the world. The kids find that to be cool. The stories are both entertaining and educational. The readers really bring the characters to life...btw, when you have a moment, read the BIOs of the readers on the inserts. The kids ask to turn on the CD player immediately upon entering the car, and the stories captivate them in a way that only a parent behind the wheel can appreciate! They often ask about words or things they don't know: "What does 'snickered' mean?" "What does 'felt betrayed' mean?" "Is there really a city called Osaka?". Overall a great investment: entertaining, educational, captivating, and fewer back-seat cries of "...he's touching me!!" Negative? The hour or so of stories seems to go by fast and in just a few short car trips you are back to the first story. If your kids are like mine, you might want to have additional audiobooks or forms of entertainment available - depending of course on YOUR tolerance level.

I purchased this before a road trip to take along with us. We thoroughly enjoyed the stories, adult and children (ages 5-13) alike. Nice variety of stories from around the world. I like that the stories had different narrators. Definitely would recommend to a friend.

Wonderful and hypnotic is what I would call this. The first story I played for my two girls (6 and 8) in the car on the way to school. It was the first time they ever made it the whole ride in total silence. After just the FIRST story, they begged for me to play it again, but it was time for school. When I picked them up, they asked right away. So So this is what we have done the last three days; listen to a new story on the way to school. I'm only on the third, The Selkie Bride. My oldest daughter rushed into school and immediately began telling the tale to the first friend she ran into.I can't say enough good about this. The children are captivated and it provides great discussion topics, for example, after the SECOND time we listened to A Sense of Theft, I asked my daughters what they think the judge felt about the case against Zena. I, myself, had to run errands today and listened to the rest of the tales. The depth, the humor, the underlying celebration of the human spirit, all in such clever packages is something I will always enjoy bringing to my children.

I'm always on the lookout for a good cd or an audiobook to play in the car for the kids. The trick is finding something that your children will enjoy, and that will not compromise your sanity when you've heard it for the grazillionth time. This is one of those CD.I enjoy listening to it, and especially my 2 favorites - "a sense of theft" ( a smart, humoristic Yiddish story ) and "Boat man's howling daughter" in which the the narrator howls so joyfully and enthusiastically it makes me want to to trap a gang of robbers and howl as well - Yeee Haaaaaaaaaaawwwww!!!!!Each story is read by a different voice actor, and they do a good job of acting out the stories, but not overly so, if you know what I mean. You have stories from different parts of the world, so this would be a good way to introduce you child to different cultures. Though some stories have some drama in them, they do not contain ANY violence or cruelty ( like some of the most popular fairy tales do - like snow white or red riding hood) and are very appropriate even for young children. I would recommend this to 4-12 yrs old.

It is always a pleasure to find folktales and other stories that not only entertain, but ennoble the listener/reader. I used one of the stores as a children's story in church and everyone, young and old loved it. Well done.

We bought this for my 3 yr old daughter, who we're trying to get into audiobooks in the car. A couple of these stories are duds, story-wise, but they're all well produced and well read.

Fantastically read by wonderful storytellers. Each story is a gem. Each storyteller makes the folk tale come alive.

I have 7 yr old twins - one who loves to read and one who is a reluctant reader - but both of them love listening to these stories. My reader gets car sick when she reads on the road, so the cd is great for road trips for both of them, but for different reasons. We also love Tell Me a Story 2. My main peeve with most audio stories is the voice of the storyteller often just doesn't fit. No so here. The voices are great - easy to listen to and the intonation is right on. Wonderful!

As a young adult woman recently diagnosed with ADHD, I bought several books to help me try and understand my life in this new frame. This was the first book I started reading. My spirits fell, however, as I realized through the first few chapters that Dr. Barkley would probably tell me I don't have ADHD.I was a bright child and didn't start doing poorly in school until high school. I don't drive aggressively. I am capable of planning, it just takes me longer than most and sometimes the system breaks down. I don't get "bored" doing repetitive tasks (in fact I tend to enjoy them because it means I can daydream). According to Dr. Barkley, this means it is less likely that I have adult ADHD.In fact, at the little mention Dr. Barkley makes of primarily inattentive ADHD, he actually spends more time explaining his newly ideated disorder "sluggish cognitive tempo," which shares a lot of characteristics with ADHD-PI but seems to involve a more hypoactive personality than a "flighty" one. From other sources, there doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that this is actually a separate disorder. Above all, he can offer no advice about how to deal with this nor the case of when you're in a gray area between ADHD and not-ADHD -- a sidebar implies that if you don't fit his criteria perfectly, you must be ascribing your normal failure to meet very high standards to a mental disorder you do not have.However, other sources indicate that ADHD of a significant impairment level in women can look different from that of men -- and they tend to have ADHD-PI -- and Dr. Barkley does not ever mention this, as far as I can tell. Dr. Barkley says that there is no evidence hormones outside of menopause (such as during menstruation) can affect ADHD symptoms, and leaves it at that, but many women have reported noticing a difference during their periods of the efficacy of their ADHD drugs, and scientists are currently researching this question. One of Dr. Barkely's checklists indicates you should have seen significant impairment by middle school, but The National Center for Girls and Women with ADHD has indicated that many women don't experience a significant problem until as late as college.Above all I resent his statement that "Saying that a person functioning as well as or even better than the average or typical person can still be considered impaired makes a mockery of the concept of 'disorder' and does a disservice to those struggling with really not being able to function as well as the norm." There is some truth in this statement, but an attitude like this would ignore the suffering of many women, where research has shown that many external observers would rate those women as not having a problem, when they do and ADHD treatment makes their lives easier and often also makes secondary depression and anxiety go away. To quote one review of scientific studies, "Knowledgeable informants (eg, families, teachers, colleagues) may be more likely to overlook ADHD symptoms in women and girls and are therefore less likely to refer them for diagnosis or treatment. "Nothing I can find in this book seems to mention how much of the research he relies on was done on adult women. I'm going to look into this further as well as report back later on whether I find his suggested coping mechanisms helpful, still. In the meantime I hope to find a different resource that will reflect my own experience better.In short, this book may help you -- but don't be discouraged if you don't match it perfectly. I didn't let myself get discouraged, and now I have a diagnosis and my life has improved considerably with treatment.

As a psychologist who specializes in ADD in all age groups and as a person with ADD myself, I recommend this book to every new adult ADD patient that I see. Soon after it came out, a patient of mine said that he'd read plenty of books that described what ADD is, but this was the first one that really told him what he could and should do about it. I tell patients that medication is only a part of the answer, the rest is changing behaviors that can increase or decrease your chances of success and that this book will help them to do that with some very practical and down to earth strategies. Because of this I try to keep copies of it in my office to sell them at cost, so they'll have it when they leave the appointment. In the last two weeks I have recommended it to 5 or 6 undergrad and law school students.I also point out to them Dr. Barkley's exceptional standards for his own research and for the evaluation of the research of others. His care in presenting results is refreshingly old fashioned, almost quaint in this age of overblown self promotion, such as when he shared his adult ADHD criteria that were eventually published in his master work, "ADHD in Adults: what the science says"[2010], at a Cape Cod workshop in 2006. The results were preliminary at the time and he cautioned us that they had only been validated on a population of males from western Mass., or something like that. We all had to chuckle a bit and at the same time time appreciate how rare and refreshing it was to see such conscientiousness in a researcher; first and foremost Russ Barkley is a scientist and the reader can be confident that this book is based on real research, not just someone's opinions.Lastly, I like the layout of the book. It follows a format that's similar to the 'for dummies' series in that it is well organized with a detailed table of contents and index, as well as visual highlights such as boxes of bullet points, highlighted tips, etc. I tell my patients that it's very 'ADD-friendly' - that they don't have to read it front to back in a linear fashion, but that they can skip around and still get a ton of useful information from it.

This was suggested by my counselor. It’s been a bit of a shock. It helped to see that what I’ve been experiencing my whole life is real and not just in my imagination. There are lots of tips and examples of what has worked for others. The one thing that really annoys me is they spend a lot of time trying to convince you that you really do have ADHD. I already know. I wouldn’t be reading this book otherwise. I felt like it was a waste to tell me how important testing is or that medication can help. How about the chapter that tells you to remember to have fun and laugh at your diagnosis. I’m sure it can help some but I found it tedious. At least the first quarter of the book annoyed the heck out of me. “Here is a list of symptoms. Do they sound like you? I’ll tell you how to work on that later. Here’s another reason testing is important.” I wanted to skip all of it but he sprinkles good to know tidbits of data so you can’t. I thought it was funny that at just past the halfway point of the book he give you tips to stick to reading something you hate. I could have used that early on and it might not have taken me 6 weeks to reach that point.I bought the kindle version of this but I think it would have been more user friendly to have the physical book. There are a lot of places to answer questions and give your thoughts and it was a bit tedious to keep opening up a note to type them out. It would also be nice to be able to flip though later and just glance at your answers without having to go into the notes themselves and open them one at a time. I just bought a copy for a family member in paperback and I’m going to suggest that he fill out the answers in pencil or better yet on a post it so he can use more space or if his answers change as he gets older. He’d a teen now and I thing this would really have helped me out in high school.

In my opinion he succeeds brilliantly.This is a book of impressive scholarship. It is rare that someone is motivated to study this topic without an obvious political and policy agenda. Even after finishing the book I still could not tell you what Professor Scheidel’s political views are. The book is descriptive not prescriptive.The thesis of the book is that, throughout all of human history, only violent cataclysms and plagues have produced significant and long standing reductions in economic inequality. Peace and prosperity always tend to lead to increasing inequality over the long term. With the benefit of hindsight, this is less surprising than it first appears. The overwhelming majority of humans have always lived with little or no economic savings or financial net worth. That is the constant.Peace and prosperity necessarily change the net worth and income of the richest more than the poorest because the economic situation of the poorest just can’t get a lot worse. The effect of compounding earnings is very powerful and not intuitively well understood by most people. This effect is even more dramatic when it spans several generations in a family. Increasing (or at least high and stable) inequality has been the default tendency throughout all of human history.Scheidel cites what he calls the Four Horsemen of economic leveling: mass mobilization warfare, transformative revolution, state collapse and plagues as the only forces that have consistently led to major economic leveling. It is important to note that only mass mobilization warfare has this effect. Ordinary warfare tends to shift fortunes between victor and vanquished without overall leveling.The period of the 20th Century that included the two World Wars and the communist revolutions represented one of the great economic levelings in all of human history. Those of us who grew up just after those events consequently have a somewhat distorted view of what is a typical historical level of economic inequality. Before reading this book I felt that there was something abnormal about he increasing degree of economic inequality we see around us. After reading it I feel like I knew all along this was inevitable. It is a rare book that can change your perspective like that.Scheidel is not arguing that economic inequality is good. He is well aware of the role of plunder and cronyism in contributing to it. He realizes that economic inequality is problematic for a number of reasons including the possibility that it may contain the seeds of the next cataclysm. He is just giving the history here not making any argument about the appropriate policy response.It’s not that the cataclysms that produce leveling don’t also hurt the poor. They always do. It’s just that the rich have a lot more to lose when a lot of people lose everything. Scheidel closes with this: “All of us who prize greater economic equality would do well to remember that with the rarest of exceptions, it was only ever brought forth in sorrow. Be careful what you wish for.”To put it another way, and to put it in the words of Woody Allen, after the next great leveling we may well look back on the previous period of inequality and think “We were happy then but we didn’t know it."

The focus is on factors that reduce, or level, that inequality and the core message is disheartening.Given the far-reaching scope, in both time and geography, finding reliable and comparable data related to wealth requires making some assumptions — actually, a LOT of assumptions. But he’s very straightforward about that, explaining each at length including, for example, how burial practices might indicate wealth, how measures of wheat could be stand in for wages and — at least in the modern world — how reported income may not accurately reflect hidden assets.He relies heavily on one metric especially, the Gini coefficient, which attempts to capture wealth inequality in a closed system (say, a country) in which zero represents full wealth and resource equality for all members (everyone has as much as everyone else) and 1 equaling maximum inequality, in which one person possesses all the wealth.It’s a thorough and far-reaching study leading to a disheartening and inescapable conclusion: wealth and resource inequality (which is maximized by the compounding advantages of wealth, access to political influence and the narrowing effects of inheritance) — has always been part of the human experience.In his view, only four things have ever leveled inequality in any significant way — mass mobilization warfare (WWI and WWII, for example), pandemics (the Plague), transformative revolutions (as in, the communist variety) and state collapse.He walks readers through many, many explorations of each of the four examples, studying before and after wealth and resource distribution from countries around the globe and throughout recorded history (and even a bit before).The research brings to life a troubling trend — a gulf of wealth inequality that continually increases, putting the capital and resources into the hands of a small (and shrinking) wealthy elite while extracting them from basically everyone else (especially the working- and lower-classes). Then one of the four levelers unwinds and the rich — who have the most to lose — slip down the social scale and working poor (who suddenly have a resource that’s in demand — their labor) are able to charge more and live more cheaply, and so move up the scale.Then it all starts over again.His research skills are incredible, so perhaps it’s no surprise the writing is solid but never lofty or in the slightest bit lyrical, but still is a punch in the gut.For example: “…in eleven of the twenty-one countries with published top incomes shares, the portion of all income obtained by the “1 percent” rose between 50 percent and more than 100 percent between 1980 and 2010. In 2012, inequality in the United States even set several records: in that year, top 1 percent income shares (both with and without capital gains) and the share of private wealth owned by the richest 0.01 percent of households for the first time exceeded the high water mark of 1929.”In other words, congratulation America, the chasm of inequality is now greater than during the era of the robber barons.The question the book raises, and one he frames specifically, is — given that inequality in the U.S. is at near historic levels (or beyond) — are there any leveling events that could close the gap, even briefly, and are there in ways we could use policy to reduce inequality. The answers, it seems, are no (short of a far-reaching nuclear conflagration, which he deems unlikely), and also no, given the lack of political will needed to redistribute wealth away from the controlling elite (even though there are scads of ways — dozens of which he lists — to at least nibble around the edges without actually leveling).It’s an important work that is, at times, mind-numbingly boring and at times pants-wettingly frightening, and almost always disheartening. I found myself almost rooting for a return of the plague, if only to knock the elites temporarily out of their golden towers and close the wealth gap just a tiny bit to the good old days of 1935.

Be careful with the audiobook.The book itself is quite good for what it's trying to do. It's a comprehensive summary of all the instances where inequality has changed throughout history, trying to establish the causes of these changes.Because the author wanted to be data-driven, precise and comprehensive, there is a lot of data and not much narrative.This is very well suited for a written book, where you can look at all the data on the pages at once, going back and forth from one data point to another.Unfortunately, it doesn't work for an audiobook. I had to rewind once every minute or two, totalling hundreds or thousands of times I had to rewind. It's also really hard to keep the focus on: when you're walking and hearing "the share of the national income to the top decile went from 17.6% to 15.2% between 1921 and 1933 in Australia, but 19.7% to 14.3% in France", it's pretty easy to zoom out.That would be ok if the audiobook came with a free kindle. Unfortunately, it doesn't. At the steep price of both versions, I don't think it's acceptable to only sell a barely usable one.
