About the Author
Michael Reardon has been painting in watercolor for over twenty-five years, using the medium to record his observations, convey a sense of place and light, and communicate his impressions of the built, natural, and imagined worlds.
In 2005 he was the recipient of the prestigious Gabriel Prize from the Western European Architecture Foundation, which enabled him to spend three months painting in Paris. After receiving his architecture degree from UC Berkeley, he worked as an architectural illustrator for over thirty years.
He is sought after as an instructor, leading workshops around the country and internationally with a focus on the use of light and color. 
He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and the California Watercolor Association. His watercolors have been featured in many magazines, including American Artist Watercolor, Artist's Magazine, Southwest Art, Watercolor Artist, Plein Air, Fine Art Connoisseur, and L'Art de l'Aquarelle.

Iztok Fajfar is an associate professor in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. A programmer and writer, he teaches computer programming at all levels, from assembly to object-oriented. His research topics include evolutionary algorithms, particularly genetic programming. He earned a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Ljubljana.

What is modern governance? Is it the battle against ‘old-fashioned’ hierarchy, or is it the restoration of key hierarchical values? Is it optimizing network management, or maximizing the benefits of market thinking in the public-sector? This book argues that it is the combination of all this. The next question is: In practice, how do successful public managers design and manage combinations of hierarchical, network and market governance? In other words: what is their rationale to apply metagovernance?

Five case-studies show that metagovernance is a public management requisite: it amplifies the variation of actions public managers can take, and it prevents the three ideal-typical governance styles from undermining each other. Similar cases of strategic environmental policy-making in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the European Commission and one case of community policing in the Netherlands illustrate that successful public-sector managers are dealing with similar metagovernance challenges in different socio-politico-administrative cultures.
